Our Vision
Calvary Christian School equips, guards, and mentors the next Apostolic generation.
ABOUT
Calvary Christian School is a private Christian school located at 3639 S. Keystone Ave. We serve students from Kindergarten to 12th grade, teaching students to be successful citizens and Christians. We believe that our next Apostolic generation should be equipped to take their place in the Kingdom of God and in our community through strong Biblical teaching and a rigorous curriculum. We guard our students by providing a wholesome and Godly environment where they can grow and mature. We believe that Godly principles are passed down from generation to generation through mentoring and example, which is why we employ solid Apostolic teachers who can encourage and model a Biblical worldview and lifestyle.
Brief History
Under the visionary oversight of the Reverend Raymond G. Hoekstra, pastor of Calvary Tabernacle, Calvary Christian School opened to students at Fletcher Avenue for the first time on Monday, September 9, 1946. Dwayne A. Ripley, who was selected by Reverend Hoekstra to be the first principal, also taught grades four, five, and six. Naomi L. Ripley was chosen to teach grades one, two, and three, while Vera O. Pieper was asked to teach grades seven and eight. Two years later, Calvary Christian School graduated its first eighth grade class of seven students.
Dwayne Ripley was succeeded in 1952 by Chester Combs, who held the office of principal until 1965. Vera O. Pieper became the third principal in 1965. Donna Cunningham later succeeded her. Dr. Russell Fowler replaced Donna Cunningham as principal and he was later named CCS superintendent. Upon the retirement of Dr. Fowler, Reverend Charles M. Barcus became the principal and served for 40 years.
As the years passed, many families began to recognize the benefits of a Christian education. Several teachers were added to the CCS staff as enrollment began to increase. Although the original teaching staff is no longer with us, they are remembered fondly whenever former students and families get together.
In 2022, Calvary Christian School transitioned the school accreditation from Indiana Freeway Accreditation to the International Christian Accrediting Association. This opened many doors for collaboration with other Christian schools around the world.
Upon the retirement of Rev. Charles M. Barcus in 2022, Rev. Katy Collins became principal.
CCS has been fully accredited with the State of Indiana through the International Christian Accrediting Association (ICAA) since 2022. Previous to that, we were accredited through Freeway Accreditation with the Indiana DOE for many years.
